Rooted in a love of history and the arts, her pieces focus on intricate pattern and unusual and unexpected colour combinations, exploring the shifting relationship of pattern and colour, stretched and applied over different shapes, surfaces and forms.

Each piece is made from FSC cerified wood, turned by hand to Freya’s own designs by British carpenters, and reveals an inherent understanding of the importance of time honoured craftsmanship in elevating the everyday to the exceptional.

Inspired by the beautiful patterns that adorn the Taj Mahal and the colours of India, the Taj Lamp is painted with a faux marbled effect, followed by a laborious zigzag pattern. The floral design is adapted from motifs carved into the architecture of the Taj Mahal, reworked in colour as a seamless pattern that looks wonderful whichever way the lamp is facing.

The Olive and Azure Anartia Lamp is decorated with a pattern reminiscent of a peacock. Its namesake, the Anartia, is rather deceptively a butterfly, with wings that mimic the patterns of a peacock. The design takes its starting point from a pattern made at the Omega Workshops, the Bloomsbury design collective, adapted to a round base so that it looks seamless wherever the lamp sits in the room. It is painted in a fresh palette of mushy greens and browns, with flecks of bright azure to lift the design.

The Bauhaus Lamp draws inspiration from the women artists of the Bauhaus school, such as Gunta Stölzl and Anni Albers, who sought to harmonise form and function and valued design as much as Fine Art. The lamp explores the possibilities of its different faces with an asymmetrical charm, featuring warm orange hues on one side and soft pink on the other, all grounded by a sophisticated dual-tone mouse grey base.

The Daymark Lamp is inspired by the Gribbin Daymark, which stands at the entrance to the Fowey Estuary in Cornwall, a favourite place of Freya's, all salty air and windswept hair, on a stretch of coast that has long drawn artists and writers. The design takes the iconic red and white stripes of the Daymark and puts a spin on them, whittling the shape into something more delicate and elegant, with perfect hoops of reds, purples and pinks around the base to complement the red and white.

A hand-painted wooden table lamp, designed and painted by Freya Marton at Black Lion Workshops. Made to order in the UK from sustainable FSC-certified wood.
The pattern began as one of Freya's gouache paintings, adapted so that it repeats seamlessly and wraps all the way round the lamp. Its bright colours are inspired by her favourite designer, Josef Frank, and the lamp is named after her brother, Jago.
